What is your view of scripture, the Bible? Is it what it purports to be, the actual word of God? And is it inerrant? That\u2019s a huge debate. Who wrote it down? From where and how did the thoughts get transmitted? So many questions. Are there answers, dependable answers? Can I stake my life, now and for eternity, on them? That\u2019s another debate today. Is there an afterlife, and did God create all this, us, out of nothing? So many translations, how could there be inerrant consistency?<\/p>\n
Today, we see that the \u2018world\u2019 is taking the position that the Bible is irrelevant, old fashioned, and probably false teaching. I saw an article recently that basically reported a certain group believed if the Bible had been written today, many things would be different. Like the biblical concept for marriage of one man and one woman. And that Sodom and Gomorrah were not destroyed for the reason given in the scriptures, but because of their greed. There were many more, all justifying their position and lifestyle. And even well-meaning pastors or laymen manipulate the word, or take it out of context for various purposes.<\/p>\n
A longtime missionary living in China informed me that the National Church within China is legal, but, guess what? They are not permitted to teach Genesis or Revelation. No Creator God, and no eternal life. That\u2019s taking away from scripture which is specifically disallowed.\u00a0\u201c<\/em><\/strong>You shall not add to the word that I command you, nor take from it, that you may keep the commandments of the Lord your God that I command you\u201d\u00a0<\/em><\/strong>(Deut. 4.2).<\/p>\n So, what does God\u2019s word say about all these questions. First and foremost\u2026\u201c<\/em><\/strong>In the beginning God\u201d.\u00a0<\/em><\/strong>Christ, when teaching the Beatitudes, makes a strong statement about the validity, completeness and power of the scriptures.\u00a0\u201cFor truly, I say to you, until heaven and earth passed away, not an iota, not a dot, will pass from the law until all is accomplished\u201d\u00a0<\/em><\/strong>(Mt. 5.18). He went further and warned that \u201cwhoever relaxes one of the least of these commandments and teaches others to do the same will be called least in the kingdom of heaven.\u201d Sounds serious!<\/p>\n So, how did these scriptures come about?\u00a0\u201cknowing this first of all, that no prophecy of Scripture comes from someone\u2019s own interpretation. For no prophecy was ever produced by the will of man, but men spoke from God as they were carried along by the Holy Spirit\u201d\u00a0<\/em><\/strong>(2 Pet. 1.20,21). And it is the same Holy Spirit that enables you to understand, believe and follow them. The \u2018world\u2019 cannot understand them because they are not empowered by the Spirit.<\/p>\n And for what are the scriptures useful? Maybe the Spirit, through Paul\u2019s letter to Timothy can shed light on this all important, even critical, question.\u00a0\u201cAll Scripture is breathed out by God and profitable for teaching, for reproof, for correction, and for training in righteousness, that the man of God may be complete, equipped for every good work\u201d\u00a0<\/em><\/strong>(2 Tim. 3.16,17). That about covers it. The source, the manner of their being revealed, their complete purpose. And the eventual result is\u2026the Believer is fully equipped for the work God has ordained for them, you, me. Any other questions? God said it, I believe it, that settles it!
