There was a woman from a nearby village who was drawing water. He asks for a drink. The conversation became very interesting at this point. First, most Jews would not go through Samaria but would go around it, and a man talking to a woman was questionable also. He gets her attention when he tells her he could provide living water. She asks for it so she would never be thirsty again and would not have to come to the well to draw water.

She was catching on but really missed the point. Then Jesus really gets her attention. He asked her to go get her husband and bring him there. She is honest and admits she doesn’t have a husband. Jesus said to her, “you are right in saying, ‘I have no husband’, for you have had five husbands, and the one you now have is not your husband. What you have said is true.” Amazed would be an understatement. She leaves her water jar and goes into the town and tells the people that they should come see a man who possibly is the Christ as he told me all that I ever did.

All knowing

This was a divine appointment that only God could foresee. He used it with the disciples, the woman, and with the town’s people to witness to his divinity. God is all knowing, ever present, and all powerful. There’s nothing we can hide from him as he already knows our every thought and action before we do it. This should not be frightening, but so encouraging to understand that he knows everything about us but still loves us.

Living water Jesus is passing through Samaria and became thirsty.
