It can lead to paralysis in our daily living, not knowing what lies just around the corner. More often than not, that which we fear or are worried about never comes to pass. Stock markets are barometers, reflecting the certainty or uncertainty of the future of the economy. Health issues for you or someone for whom you care, job security, cash flow, relationships or simply the issues facing you that day can cause uncertainty.

I was sharing with a family member recently about certain financial uncertainties. As I was alone praying and pondering the situation, this thought hit me. I shared it with them, but it really spoke to me about peace in my life in light of my worries and anxieties.

‘When your future seems insecure, be secure in the One who knows your future.’

Hope

But how do we do that practically? ‘Easy for you to say, Bill, but you don’t know what I am facing.’ And you are right; I don’t, but I’d bet I have at one time had similar issues. The basic fact we face is this—we are finite. We live in time and space. Second after second, minute after minute, hour after hour—you get the picture. All future is hidden from us, not to harm us or confound us—it’s simply where and how we live our lives. So, faith in something or someone has to accompany our walk through life or else we will go stark raving mad.

But what we place our faith in will determine the level and assurance of certainty, peace and well-being we seek. There is a faith in faith, that somehow everything will be okay. Sounds fatalistic! Karma and pot luck just won’t get it. We all need to believe that there is a source of wisdom, knowledge and love that has our best interest. That even in times of uncertainty, whatever actually happens will be for our good or others for whom we care.

Hebrews 11.1 defines faith this way. “Now faith is the substance of things hoped for, the evidence of things not seen.” Substance and evidence; both good things when uncertainty comes creeping into our minds. But that still doesn’t answer the question. Faith in what? Rather, better stated; faith in who? And how? Well, we are created beings; so would it not stand to reason that it would be our Creator. And how is best accomplished by placing trust in him for results, and believing whatever they are will be the best for us, even if not our desired choice.

Our Father

Embrace uncertainty as a means to get to know our Father more intimately. We will see him working out our situations for our good. Notice I used the word Father. He is not just a God sitting off in the heavens. He is a parent, intimately involved in our lives. What earthly parent doesn’t want the very best for their kids? Much more so; the One who made us has a plan for our lives to bring us joy while bringing glory and honor to himself. The fact is our Creator God wired us to trust him, not in something he has created. “Trust in the Lord with all your heart, and lean not on your own understanding; in all your ways acknowledge him, and He shall direct your paths” (Prov. 3.5,6 NKJV).

You can sit and worry, wring your hands, pace the floor, have another drink, scream at your family—but have these ever solved the issue? Is there any peace in any of these? Maybe, just maybe it is time to put these actions away and begin, through prayer, to confess (agree with) your inadequacy, while acknowledging his adequacy—in everything, especially your future uncertainties. Where else would one start? It takes it out of your feeble hands and puts it in his strong and capable hands.

I can’t help but suggest this much quoted and much used verse when we are facing uncertainty of every kind. But, frankly, it says it all!

“Be anxious for nothing, but in everything by prayer and supplication, with thanksgiving, let your requests be made known to God; and the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and minds through Christ Jesus” (Phil. 4.6,7 NKJV).

Now, don’t you feel better already, and more certain about your uncertainties? That’s his peace. If not, get back into your prayer closet and continue to cast it on him. Know for certain, he cares! Finally, don’t you know that if you put your confidence in him, he will pull out all the stops to reward your faith? That’s just who our Father is!

Security UNCERTAINTY…is so challenging in many and varying ways.
